Lieutenant Bowers survives sinking of Meredith in Pacific
Lieut. (jg) John Zimmerman Bowers of the Medical Corps U.S.N.R. was aboard the destroyer Meredith when it was sunk during the October battle near Guadalcanal. He spent three days and nights on a raft with fellow survivors, strafed by Japanese planes, before being rescued by a destroyer. He later reported, along with others, that crew members stayed at their guns despite injuries, and that life on the rafts included malted milk tablets, hardtack, and scarce water. Bowers returned home for a brief rest before new duties at Norfolk Navy Hospital.
