Maryland study forecasts large state vegetable acreage by 1955
A University of Maryland survey projects 115000 acres planted to major vegetables for processing by 1955 to meet possible mobilization needs. Tomatoes could reach 40000 acres, with sweet corn 41000, snap beans 13000, lima beans 6000, green peas 10000, and cucumbers 4200. Labor and tinplate supply are key constraints.

Calves and Heifers Need Best Feed for Growth
Calves and heifers require liberal, easily digested feeds with high energy, quality protein, minerals, and vitamins to reach milking herd potential. Dr. J W Pou of Maryland Dairy Dept notes the limited whole milk starter method is economical, using about 350 pounds of whole milk per calf. Proper calf management matches feeding importance, with 1951 Maryland Dairy Herd records showing one in ten calves lost and pneumonia and scours causing 34 percent deaths.
