Price Policies May Cause Meat Shortage
Washington January 25 One witness told a Senate subcommittee that current price and rationing policies threaten a general meat shortage within four or five months recommending higher producer prices and a rationing holiday. Another witness blamed heavy prime cuts in lend lease meat shipments for waste at home and urged caution on rations. George A Casey testified that 500000 pounds of edible offals are being dumped into rendering tanks under a War Food Administration order restricting storage time. He supported suspending meat rationing to ease the hog market peak in December. Meek of Virginia warned of chaotic marketing from price ceilings and rationing blocks, proposing a February suspension to drain surplus. He said costs have risen, forcing producers to market more, foreseeing a 75 percent drop in Eastern hog production from 1943.

Concrete Ship Vitruvius Proves Easy to Handle
In Baltimore the 366 foot Vitruvius, a wartime concrete cargo ship built by McCleskey & Co, is under repair. Captain W Johansson, Finnish veteran in command since December, says the vessel is easy to handle but slow due to engine issues and limited fuel and water capacity. Crew note the absence of welded seams and rivet heads, and a chief mate jokes about going ashore on concrete.
