Government offers incentives to grow vital war crops
Washington announces a plan to pay growers about 100 million dollars in incentive payments for expanding production of soybeans, peanuts, grain sorghums, flax, sweet potatoes, and dried peas. The program targets costs to rise with added labor needs and will reward acreages surpassing 90 percent to 110 percent of farm goals. A separate land army plan asks 3.5 million people to work temporarily on farms to boost crop output, with pay at 30 cents an hour or local rates.
