Pittsburg Jan 26 wholesale prices declined after a day of boycott on high priced foods. Over 125000 workers began a 30 day abstinence from meat as hogs and cattle prices fell yet retail meat prices remained largely steady. Butter eggs and cold storage prices edged down slightly amid calls to curb cost of living.
A February Raimpton's Magazine photo depicts the actual dag ironed to a page showing a flag nailed to the north pole by Commander Peary. The image notes a twelve year old gift from Peary’s wife and describes cutout strips and fragments left at northern extremities of three bodies, marking polar origins.
Director Walters and Dr McNall argue that a municipal slaughterhouse would lower consumer meat prices and ensure inspected product. Developments show boycotts of butcher stalls in residential areas while fish markets see a rush. Fish prices have dropped, and oyster and fish consumption is rising per department sources.
Milk drops a cent a quart and eggs fall a half to one cent a dozen in local markets as nationwide price agitation grows. Butter declines several cents per pound with big wholesalers citing anti monopoly laws as a grand jury opens into dealer combinations. Edward Montler, a farmer six miles north of South Bend, fired at a fleeing mongrel and struck Mrs. Melford Price in the temple, killing her as her husband stood nearby. Hosteler pursued the dog and fired toward the animal but hit Mrs. Price. The coroner investigates. Hosteler not yet arrested. Local business activity noted.
New York Jan 24 United States Steel corporation announces a 1 percent regular dividend and an extra fraction of 1 percent on common stock plus a 1.5 percent preferred dividend. The quarterly report shows net earnings of 40,871,308 for the latest period and various prior quarter figures. Unfilled orders on Dec 5 927,031 tons, with production figures noted.
Chicago dispatch reports Dr D K Pearsons, nearly ninety, plans to give away every cent he owns before death after donating over 4 million to colleges across 24 states. He says he will endow more and aims to die penniless, predicting a ten year span of further giving.
Washington reports quote President Taft denying sensational rumors of a general crusade against lawful combinations of capital. He states no statement was made apart from the White House and that prosecutions will follow only if grounds exist under the Sherman act. The president shows no intent to press new measures this session and will await Supreme Court rulings on key trust cases.
Doylestown Pa January 28 A poverty stricken family of eight headed by Mrs Lottie Tope with six children lived for months in a hen house near Lower Wakefield Town. They came from Trenton and could not afford a home. The court directed an inquiry into welfare care. The situation left the children poorly clothed and near freezing. The judge acted after the case was presented by the P C C a welfare agency. A separate note mentions a man charged with losing a license tag and a fur bale affecting a judgment in New York City.
