County welfare reforms focus on applicant needs survey
Social Services officials spent a day asking welfare applicants what they need rather than what they can receive. A survey of 250 applicants showed job concerns top the list, with 28 percent unemployed, 22 percent needing financial help, and 15 percent citing injury or illness. Mood highlighted education gaps and prior work history while noting reforms aim to boost self sufficiency. The department sought a 46 thousand dollar boost to its 450 thousand dollars from county funds to add a warehouse worker, a child support mediator, and a supportive services fund, likely funded by federal grants.
