Tax help offered to the elderly and disabled in Frederick County
The Frederick County chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees sponsors 22 volunteers for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at five sites starting the first week of February. Eligibility is limited to unmarried individuals with incomes under 30 000 or married couples filing jointly under 50 000. Volunteers can handle wages, interest, dividends, IRA distributions, pensions, Social Security, and similar income with appointments required.

Glendening Receives Hepatitis A Shot After Possible Exposure

CDC Pilot Program Targets Antibiotic Overuse in Children
Baltimore area doctors join a $250000 CDC funded two year pilot to curb overuse of antibiotics. Twenty two physicians across Baltimore and five counties will train peers, distribute parent pamphlets, and promote rest and fluids for viral illnesses. Fire rescue volunteers honored in Urbana community ceremony
Urbana area fire rescue groups New Market and Green Valley were honored for 1997 service. Karen L. Calhoun, longtime EMT and former vice president, was remembered after being killed in a traffic accident. A redbud tree was planted in her memory at Green Valley station. In 1997 New Market logged 406 fire and 562 ambulance calls. Green Valley 274 fire and 376 EMS calls. Members hitting 10 percent call participation were named. The departments purchased Rescue Engine 153 and refurbished Engine 252 with funds and grants used for new Amicus tools and equipment.
