Man Held For Jury In Slaying

A 30-year-old Centerville man was ordered held without bond for the Grand Jury on murder charges after a preliminary hearing. He allegedly killed his girlfriend with a sawed off shotgun outside Brown's tavern following a dispute over another man. The weapon reportedly has a 1-inch barrel and 15-inch overall length. Pellets struck the victim in the back near the left shoulder and lodged inside. A separate case saw Grover H. Smith convicted of improper passing and fined $20 after a January 2 incident with a police cruiser on Yellow Springs Pike.

Mrs Gregory Seeks Re election As Orphans Court Chief

Mrs Mary Hancock Gregory announced today she will seek re election to the Orphans Court subject to the May Democratic primary. She is the only current court member seeking another term, while Judge Frank C Shook will not run. Dr Norvell Belt, the third member, has announced candidacy for County Commissioner. Mrs Gregory has served 14 years on the court and ten as chief judge. She was born in Richmond Virginia and moved here in 1914 after marrying Curry W Gregory. After her husband died in 1940 she filled his term as clerk at Montevue County Home and Hospital and was later appointed to the Orphans Court in 1948. She won the 1950 election as the first woman elected to political office in the county and has continued as chief judge under governors Lane and McKeldin. Judge Shook retires after 12 years on the bench.

Five Day Forecast and San Francisco Quake Report

The five day forecast notes near normal temperatures with normal highs around 38 to 43 and lows around 24 to 29, warmer Thursday then cooling early next week, with weekend precipitation under half an inch. Seven Bomb Explosions Rock Paris While Defying De Gaulle

AP reports seven bombs exploded across Paris in rapid succession aimed at opponents of French Algeria policy. Four apartment buildings damaged and no injuries reported. Police believe plastic bombs used by the Secret Army Organization. Earlier blasts Tuesday night and Monday night blamed on the same group, after the French Foreign Ministry bombing killed one and injured several.

Leadership Training Meet Set at Frederick High School

A surprise snow storm moved through the county this morning easing into rain afternoon as temperatures rose above freezing. The weather bureau cited an east developing storm and noted colder nights ahead with occasional light rain possible tonight and a low near 30 expected tomorrow.

Slain in Caracas as leftist clashes escalate

In Caracas sixteen people were killed and eighty six wounded on a day of violence marked by military police fire from snipers and bombs. Eight buses were set alight amid clashes with leftist agitators opposing President Romulo Betancourt as foreign ministers gathered at Punta del Este to discuss actions against Fidel Castro. A nationwide transit strike accompanied the turmoil.

Fire guts Carroll County frame house in Bunker Hill area

Firefighters from Union Bridge and Taneytown battled a two story frame tenant house on the William Strine farm between Union Bridge and Taneyville. Fireman John Reaver from Taneytown was injured with chest injuries and treated by a private physician. Damage estimate unavailable. Union Bridge was called back as flames rekindled early morning.

Consultants Engaged For Frederick County Conference

Educators specializing in many learning fields have been engaged as group consultants for the Frederick County Teachers Conference at West Frederick Junior High School on Friday. The theme How I Do It aims to improve instruction with practical group discussions across subjects.
