Maryland farmers urged to boost feed with spring nitrogen top dressing

University of Maryland agronomy officials say maximizing next summer’s feed requires careful use of fertilizer and manure. Spring top dressing with nitrogen can raise yields, with 22 pounds of grain gain per pound of nitrogen up to 20 pounds total, plus 150 to 250 pounds of 3-12-6 on corn. Alfalfa benefits from post harvest 100 pounds per acre of Q-12-12 or 0-14-7, and 50 pounds borax per ton of fertilizer. Hay, timothy, and Ladino clover also need spring top dressing, while manure with super phosphate boosts returns in corn and supports pasture and hay production.
