His Failure And His Fame Part 1 Maryland Glassmaker Ameling

German born glassmaker John Frederick Amelung built a Maryland glass works after leaving Bremen in 1784. Driven by Crockett and Bremen merchants, he faced German and British opposition, winter hardships, and legal bans on emigration before sailing aboard the Fame with family to establish a self sufficient American operation. He gathered letters from Adams Franklin and Barclay and recruited workers from Bohemia and Thuringia amid hopes for a thriving colonial glass industry.

Amelung Mansion and New Bremen Glass Works Beginnings

The Amelung family founded Maryland's first glass works at New Bremen near Frederick Town after arriving from Germany in 1784. John Frederick Amelung built a Georgian mansion in 1785 overlooking Sugar Loaf Mountain and established a German school with a broad curriculum, while expanding the glass operation to employ about 300 workers by 1787. The venture relied on German craftsmen, local settlers, and ongoing efforts to recruit more blowers from Europe, with strong early sales across Frederick Town, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York.
