Court Upholds Prison Censorship of Mail
U S District Judge T Emmet Clark refused to grant the antiwar priests Daniel and Philip Berrigan the right to send writings and tape recordings from Danbury Federal Prison without censorship. The ruling denies a bid to certify a class action for all 21,000 federal inmates and leaves intact prison review rules for outside communications. The decision notes prisoners must accept limited rights during confinement, and whether the brothers will appeal is not known. The pair are serving sentences for destroying selective service records in Catonsville Md and faced related charges in a broader case.
