U S Rejects Russian Offer as Blackmail in UN Debate
In Paris the United States denounced a Russian plan to add five Communist states to UN membership in exchange for nine Western-favored applicants. Ambassador Ernest A. Gross warned against “blackmail” and veto-driven deals as the Political Committee considered a Peru proposal to review member applications. The US backs admitting qualified states, provided they renounce North Korean and Chinese-backed aggression, and notes Soviet vetoes against eight listed applicants while others await action. Meanwhile the committee approved a three-year, 250 million dollar resettlement program for about 900,000 Arab refugees from Palestine in neighboring countries. Elsewhere Vishinsky said farewell to Assembly President Nervo and headed home to Moscow.
