Glendening outlines Maryland environmental goals in final year
Governor Parris Glendening urged the General Assembly to act this year to protect the Eastern Shore coastal bays from development. He listed four priorities including tougher Chesapeake Bay Critical Areas protections and higher polluter penalties, noting Maryland's fines are low compared with Pennsylvania. He also discussed legal standing to sue polluters and acknowledged amendments from the House Environmental Matters Committee.

Montana-style tax battle rocks Montgomery County lawmakers
Montgomery County leaders and state legislators unite with residents to challenge midcycle reassessments described as a tax gouge. Officials say the practice shifts tax burden to homeowners, revaluing hundreds of properties beyond sales prices and potentially boosting county revenue by millions yearly. Critics warn the method could spread to other counties unless curbed. A House hearing is planned as plaintiffs, including homeowner Kevin Schuyler, push for court action and policy change.
