Demand Separation From French Morocco
Spanish Moroccan chiefs in Tetuan called for a temporary separation from French Morocco and refused to recognize the French-imposed Sultan. About 30,000 white robed Moors cheered as they urged sovereignty for their caliph Moulay Hassan Ber El Mehdi under Spanish protection. France warned it would use all means to block the split while U.S. officials studied the situation amid costly U.S. air bases near completion in the protectorate.
