Two fatally wounded in pistol duel in East St Louis between city clerk Mathew Cleary and blacksmith Richard Buckley after quarrel. Quarantine physician Dr J M Ward killed by falling into open hatch aboard the Danish steamer Euxinia while inspecting. Ward, six years in quarantine service, son of former Congressman Ward.

Three German warships Panther Vineta and Falke bombarded San Carlos fort while Venezuela forces replied with heavy fire. In Coro fighting, General Riera’s rebels attacked from two directions, but after ten hours government troops under Hermosillo and Telleria repelled them, with 10 government dead and many rebels killed or captured. American agents in the Ruhr sought terms for 100000 tons of coal for U S shipment.
Philadelphia Jan 24 coal strike commission session opened with Chairman Gray denouncing tyranny as District President Fahy of the Miners Union refused permission to a contractor to erect a boiler house at a colliery to prevent damage. A schooner Abial Abbott of nine crew ran aground one mile north of Ship Bottom Light in heavy seas. Four died, five were saved including Captain Isaac Beawkins and seamen Luther, Berg, Burns, and Leaven. Leaven died after rescue. Missing are Pierce Primer Carter Brandt. Vessel bound from Turka Island to New York with salt.
News from Block Island reports the United States tug Leyden struck rocks and was total loss. 28 crew and Lieutenant Chester Wells were evacuated by breeches buoy after heavy surf and a life saving crew’s daring efforts. Seaman Legiam, badly injured, survived only with great difficulty.
