Republicans attack from within Maryland GOP
In Annapolis the Republican Club of Maryland urged grassroots Republicans to back primary opponents for lawmakers who voted against party lines. The January newsletter promised to trade ten Reagan Democrats for each dissenter to restore unity, sparking outrage among targeted Republicans and concern from party leaders about harming the 1998 governor and legislative races. Club president Guy Sabatino defended the effort as informing the public about how delegates and lawmakers vote on issues Republicans support, citing 19 votes from the 1996 session as the agenda core.
