NEA Backs Use of Teachers Aides in Classrooms

The National Education Association challenged the notion that shortages of good teachers are unsolvable and endorsed aides as a remedy. It criticized untested projections and noted Ford Foundation funded research from Bay City Michigan where aides relieve teachers of clerical and housekeeping duties. The Fund for the Advancement of Education cited promising evidence that aides can expand a teacher’s reach from 30 to 52 pupils, a claim the NEA report cautions remains unevaluated.
