A Gathering of Old Men by Ernest Gaines reviewed
A Gaines critique on the novel set in Louisiana in the 1970s. The book uses multiple first person narrators from both black and white groups to explore race relations, old vs. new social orders, and a looming confrontation after a neighbor’s death. The narrative centers on Candy Marshall, Mathu, and a group of elder black men drawn into defending themselves amid white authority. The work portrays a compassionate, shifting portrait of southern change and enduring tension between past cruelties and a possible future.
