Food n Friends sustains senior citizens in Frederick County

A year into the Food 'n' Friends program, Frederick County’s senior citizens gain not just meals but social ties. Volunteers and local groups including the Board of Education, churches, fire companies, and clubs support five daily lunches, with seniors contributing per meal to keep the effort self sustaining. The program expands countywide, reducing loneliness and promoting dignity among older residents through neighborly acts and events. Community youth groups like Emmitsburg Cub Scouts, Brunswick Brownie Troop 1298, and Walkersville FFA contribute entertainment, gifts, and meals, underscoring a broad, collaborative effort to improve aging life in the region.

Democracy at risk as turnout wanes and cynicism grows

Jack Anderson argues that public participation, not cynicism, preserves democracy. He notes low turnout, confidence declines, and warns that leaders without broad support lack a mandate. He invites readers to vote on a bicentennial motto and stresses the need for active citizen involvement to avoid democratic decline.

Vote for the bicentennial slogan nine-cent appeal

In urging public participation a national mood of discontent is seen as manageable by hopeful reform. Citizens are asked to mail a nine-cent vote for the bicentennial slogan with a deadline of February 16 and results announced March 21. finalists will appear in major magazines and posted in Woolworths and Holiday Inns nationwide.
