Fire at Newark steel works destroys stock and machinery with an estimated $15,000 loss. Diamonds valued at $20,000 seized in New York from Amsterdam. Explosions at Allentown dynamite works kill three. others injured and buildings damaged. A woman named Annie Gray gives birth near Baltimore and is taken to hospital. A kitchen boiler explosion at Hunter's Point kills a child and wounds a mother. Local injuries include a girl struck by a horse in Wolfeville and several deaths from disease and accidents, with funeral notices for Mrs Dubel and others.
The aggregate state taxes on corporations for 1883 totaled 115,670.10. After appeals by corporations, the net total was 114,542.94. Taxes on stock assets and deposits were 71,742 with real property taxes 45,917.50. Taxes paid into the Treasury on stock assets and deposits were 65,811.07 plus real property taxes 45,017.50, totaling 107,728.57 for the year.
The weekly business failures reported to BR. G. Dun & Co. show 382 in the United States and 48 in Canada, totaling 425, up from 833 the prior week by 92. Most failures, 226, occurred in the western and southern states, the highest weekly total since 878.
