Mahoney And Byrd Exchange Warm Words
In Baltimore on January 17 Dr H C Byrd said George P Mahoney offered not to run for governor and back him for state comptroller in 1954. Mahoney called the claim untrue and said Byrd proposed it, while Byrd said he would help but not back Mahoney for comptroller. Byrd described talks as part of a larger gubernatorial inquiry amid shifting Maryland political plans. Tawes and D Alesandro announced reelection and withdrawal, shaping the governor race.
