Aquino seen as possible winner in Philippines election
U S officials privately say Corazon Aquino could defeat Ferdinand Marcos in the February vote, a result seen as best for preventing a communist takeover. Some worry Marcos may rig or cancel the election or declare martial law. Officials cite Aquino’s momentum, her appeal to curb insurgency and protect U.S. bases Subic Bay and Clark Field, with Congress and the Pentagon weighing aid conditioned on a fair vote and neutral military behavior.
