Turning Point in Mid East Policy and Pakistan's Role
The article discusses a major turning point in US foreign policy with leaders like Cabot Lodge and Dulles emphasizing aid flexibility. It notes Soviet leverage with Egypt over projects such as the Aswan Dam and Pakistan’s strategic position in Middle East defense and Southeast Asia alliances amid domestic Muslim resistance to secular reform. Dulles plans a visit to Karachi as Pakistan remains a pivotal bulwark against Soviet influence, while internal debates over a secular constitution continue in Pakistan and East Pakistan autonomy remains contested.
