Saddam Hussein remained defiant after the U N pullout deadline. He told troops in a radio address he would not bargain over Iraq rights. Baghdad radio issued air raid instructions as U S weighs next steps with national security advisers.
President Francois Mitterrand declared that the use of armed force to drive Iraq from Kuwait is legitimate and France will help, with Premier Rocard saying French troops will be placed under U.S. command to aid in liberating the emirate. He spoke to a special parliamentary session ahead of a vote on engagement.

Cyrus Jacob Mike Rudy 76 of 213 Broad Street Middletown died Monday Jan 14 at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was a longtime business and civic leader, a WWII Navy veteran, and served on multiple local boards including Middletown Valley Bank and Grangers Mutual Insurance. He is survived by his wife Helen Miller Rudy.
