Black infant mortality gap remains steep in CDC study
The CDC reports that if Black babies had the same birth weight and mortality risk as White babies, about 3.5 percent fewer Black infant deaths would occur per 1,000 births. In 1984, 184 Black infants per 1,000 died in the first year, vs 94 for White babies, with low birth weight driving most deaths.
