Farmers protest dairy property tax assessments at county meeting
A former Montgomery County farmer and current Urbana area landowner urged commissioners to revise dairy farm assessments to reflect income rather than real estate value. He cited barns and parlor values, noting dairy farming as the county’s principal industry with 14 million of 18 million dollars in farm taxes from dairy operations. A retired teacher, McGill, also asked for lower home assessment, saying his Thurmont residence rose from 3700 to 4590 while other property costs stayed stable.
