B and O Seeks End of New York Run Amid Subsidy Pressure
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad seeks permission to discontinue its 72 year passenger service between Baltimore and New York amid dwindling patronage and rising highway subsidized travel. Phipps blamed expressways and bridges built with public funds for the decline, noting a 49 percent drop since 1946 and a 71 passengers per train average. The move faces union opposition and political pushback from Baltimore and Harford County officials. Edna Purviance, Chaplin's longtime leading lady, dies at 61 after a long illness in Hollywood, predeceased by her aviator husband. Funeral services planned at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
