Germans Press Forward on Russian Front Near Warsaw
Petrograd reports heavy German artillery along a fifteen mile line east of Rochaczew and Skierniewice. Russian defenses hold against isolated assaults while German efforts to cross the Bzura and Rawka rivers indicate a wider push toward Warsaw. Unofficial word says Russia has repelled infantry attacks and even retaken the fortress guarding the Mazurian lakes at Boyen.

Mortally Wounds Wife Then Ends Own Life in New Jersey
James Hutching of Pittsburgh followed his wife Ida to Montclair and shot her, then killed himself after a reconciliation attempt. The tragedy occurred January 16 as Hutching announced he would come to Montclair to force her to stay. In Williamsport, Emanuel Leib, Civil War veteran, was fatally wounded by his son-in-law Charlie Paips in a money dispute at Leib's home. Paips fled, likely fatally wounded, by the end of the incident.
