Prison capacity holds steady with current Maryland sentences
Maryland officials say prison capacity should cover a growing inmate population if mandatory sentences for small-time offenders are not raised. Public Safety Secretary Bishop Robinson warned that longer terms for nonviolent crimes could require far more beds, urging caution at a legislative hearing. He noted 5,000 inmates in Baltimore City Detention Center for sentences of one year or less, versus 12,000 beds needed if terms rise to 30 months. The 1987-201? budget shows corrections costs near 700 million, with inmate numbers rising from 13,000 to over 22,000 due to drugs and unemployment.
