Frederick County ninth graders improved their state mandated functional math test pass rate by over eight percent this year, with 1,392 of ninth graders passing the October exam. The county rate of 68.2 percent tops Maryland’s statewide 64.9 percent, while tenth and eleventh graders show strong passing progress.
Frederick County students show strong performance in Maryland Functional Testing with a focus on early intervention. Education officials credit solid teaching and an appropriate assistance program guiding teachers, counselors, and testing supervisors to create individual plans for any student failing. No graduate failure yet, though standards may admit risk.
Governor Harry Hughes outlines a 4.2 billion dollar state budget calling for a 6.5 percent spending rise and ample funding from general funds and borrowed highway funds to cover savings and loan losses. The plan includes a 3.5 percent across the board raise for over 60,000 state workers and highlights major education funding, with public education consuming nearly 2 billion.
