Pension bill backed by G A R would grant 12 dollar monthly to Civil War vets
Washington Jan 15 Congressmen introduced a service pension bill backed by the Grand Army of the Republic. It would pay 12 dollars a month to Union Army veterans who served 90 days, earned an honorable discharge, and are at least 62. Widows married before June 7 1890 would also receive the pension. The measure, not to interfere with existing laws, prohibits double pensions. The GAR committee met the president and Pension Commissioner Ware to discuss the proposal. The House earlier passed other big appropriation bills and adjourned.
