Havana Letter Reflections On City Life And People
A traveler describes arrival in Havana on the Whitney cargo voyage, noting harbor scenes, the forthright street life, and a hotel run by a Pasaje runner who speaks English. The writer contrasts Havana’s narrow streets, iron barred doors, and tropical inner courtyards with New York, comments on Obispo Street as a Broadway analogue, and observes Parks, Prado avenues, and price levels while hoping American competition will spur improvement. The piece also hints at broader national possibilities and the responsibility facing the nation, with a brief aside about a suggested boarding house with cows and meals for locals.
