Proposed school budget prompts small turnout and concerns
A public briefing on the 1997 179 million dollar school budget drew only one question from parent Michael Jewett who warned of possible 50 percent cuts to the elementary magnet gifted program. Frederick seeks eastern loop with $154 million price tag
Frederick County and Frederick City approve an eastern loop plan with a total cost of 154 million dollars. The project will extend from I 70 to Md 26 and US 15 north of the city, funded by city county state and landowner contributions. Phase I runs to 1998 costing about 77 million with city and county each paying 783000 and J O Neill Jenkins paying 2.1 million. Phase II costs about 12 million to be split between the city and county, completing by 1999. Phase III costs about 64 million with county and city each 2.6 million and the state 1.1 million, completing by 2001. The plan aims to unlock industrial land and create tens of thousands of jobs while concerns about development and annexation remain.

Mary M. Shankle 100 of Frederick died Wednesday January 10 at Meridian Nursing Center. She was married to Roy Monroe Shankle who died January 3, 1987. Born July 14, 1895 in Washington DC, she was daughter of John and Ida Haugh. Survived by daughter Jessie Mary Oden, son Marshall Wetzel, two grandchildren, four great grandchildren. Private services and interment will be Mount Hope Cemetery Woodsboro. Keeney and Basford Funeral Home in charge.

Memorial for Florence Banvard 102 former librarian and volunteer
Florence Banvard 102 of Citizens Nursing Home and former Crestwood Village Frederick died Thursday January 11 at the nursing home. Born June 28 1893 in New York she was a librarian in New York City and after Pearl Harbor volunteered in recruitment. She later moved to Bellaire Texas where she led hospital auxiliary efforts at St Marks and St Luke's. Survived by son Theodore James Fleming daughter Janet Florence Stein eight grandchildren twelve great grandchildren and others.
