Train enthusiast turns hobby into business
David McDonald, 52, who grew up around trains, turned 56 years of interest into The Golden Spike, a Fort Smith model train shop opened 15 years ago. He notes prewar models used tin and cast iron while today’s layouts use plastics and metals with realistic landscapes. McDonald advises beginners start small, with a 4 by 8 foot plywood base, and expects continued growth as technology advances including video tutorials and computer aids.
