Colombia refuses to join naval force in Caribbean

Bogota reports that President Virgilio Barco’s government will not participate in any joint US led drug interdiction operation in international Caribbean waters. Washington acknowledged tensions over plans to deploy Colombian ships and planes, amid broader Latin American sensitivity to US military action. Bush urges farmers to back pollution reduction efforts

President Bush told the American Farm Bureau convention in Orlando that productive agriculture and a clean environment are compatible. He urged support for groundwater pollution reduction from pesticides and fertilizers, pressed for market oriented farm policies, a capital gains tax cut, and a safety net for farmers, noting surpluses declined and net income rose while stressing environmental protection.

Cristiani Says Soldiers Killed Six Jesuit Priests

President Alfredo Cristiani stated that military personnel were involved in the November slayings of six Jesuit priests and others at a Jesuit university. A joint staff head noted an elite battalion had been confined and questioned. A special commission will pursue full truth and punish those implicated. A $250,000 reward was offered for information leading to arrests and convictions.

Shuttle Columbia launch scrubbed by weather in Cape Canaveral

NASA canceled today's flight of space shuttle Columbia a satellite rescue mission due to low clouds at 6000 feet delaying the countdown. If rescheduled for Tuesday the window would run 58 minutes to 8 33 a.m. and the mission would be the second longest shuttle flight with LDEF experiments aboard.
