A Khrushchev audience seemed possible only if Italian President Giovanni Gronchi travels to Moscow, a trip delayed due to Gronchi’s illness. Cardinal Ottaviani signaled a cool reception to the idea and recalled past papal refusals to meet Adolf Hitler.
