Mechanized Army Harvests Mammoth Iowa Corn Crops

Des Moines features Arnold S Erickson details Iowa's shift to machine picked corn amid war labor shortages. About 80 to 90 percent of a record 641,212,000 bushel crop was harvested by 33,000 tractor powered pickers, with machines boosting output to 1,000 bushels per day. Community husking rings and war harvest certificates supported growers while hybrid corn aided efficiency as thousands of acres yielded 59 bushels per acre.
