The Welsh fighter Jem Driscoll arrives in the United States amid hopes he may join the ranks of notable pugilists. Early reports describe him as a rising talent with a novel fighting style, drawing attention from American boxing circles.
Siovana January 8 Major Francia P Fremont of the Fifth Infantry is arraigned in a general court martial convened at Shgua La Grande to hear charges that he made misstatements about Major Wallace Clark of his regiment. The proceeding was ordered by the president.
The report recalls Major Clark becoming intoxicated at Sagua and being removed from command and barred from future separate commands in Cuba. He is charged with denying the statement after making it. Major Fremont, son of General John C. Fremont, faces his third court martial. He previously was convicted of financial irregularities and of striking a man and using improper language.
Mrs. Mary V. Kirke sixty year old former South Africa missionary and fourteen year resident of Aiken South Carolina lies isolated in a guarded house now tended by a faithful woman companion who acts as her protector as she has suffered aesthetic leprosy and blindness for three years.
Carroll Letham, a member of the Prince William county board of supervisors, was found dead in his room in Manangas Virginia. He was shot through the heart and authorities have not yet determined if the death was accidental or self-inflicted, though suicide is the prevailing theory.
Mrs. Erb and her sister Mrs. Beisel were found not guilty of murdering Captain J. Clayton at Red Gables. The verdict brought tears and relief as the women thanked jurors and their lawyers, while claiming persecution and a conspiracy against them.
