Gillmore’s Harsh Captivity Described After Rescue
Lieutenant J C Gillmore of the Yorktown details eight months in Filipino captivity under General Tino on Luzon. He says he was treated brutally after Dec. 16, witnessed executions, endured hunger and disease, and credits a 146-strong rescue party led by Colonel Luther Hare with their survival during a perilous raft journey down the Abcaluc river and into safety at Vigan. The tale contrasts harsh treatment under Tino with relatively milder treatment under Aguinaldo.
