Salvation Army March Through Frederick Streets Tonight

A march by Salvation Army members from the barracks through the principal streets is scheduled for this evening at 7 o'clock. Also noted is the Bible Society Anniversary for the Young Men's Bible Society of Frederick County on Sunday evening January 18 at Evangelical Reform church with Rev. Luther Kehlman speaking. A Frederick City Y M C A board meeting adjourned with secrecy for the remaining business. Gas customers urged to settle bills at the American Heat and Light Company on or before the 10th inst.

Social Circles Honor Miss Eva McLaure Birthday Party

Old Fire Engine Shows Early Steam Fire Principle

The Baltimore Sun notes an exhibit of old time fire engines including a 1764 model once belonging to the Friendship Company of Frederick. The well preserved engine illustrates the ancestor of modern steam fire apparatus. Lemuel S. Prince, a survivor of Baltimore’s old fire department, is noted for his prominence in Frederick.

Overproduction and Storage of Apples Hit Baltimore Market

The fall harvest brought an enormous overproduction of apples. Wet damp weather harmed storage prospects, leaving some dealers with unsold stock and rotting fruit. Baltimore’s stock largely came from New York and Ohio, with prices on apples dropping to 125 to 175 per barrel. Valley of Virginia produce like Newtown Pippins, favored by Queen Victoria, were bought for shipment east and sold in orchards for 2 to 3 per barrel.

Voters decided directors for Farmers and Mechanics National Bank and several others while Junior and United Steam Fire Engine shows elected officers. The twenty second annual meeting of the Baltimore Female House of Refuge directors was held yesterday. New directors named for 1889 include J. Wm. Baughman representing this county, Wm. A. Wisong, Lewis A. Birely and Albert Ritchie of Baltimore, with Mrs. Lewis Steiner listed as one of the lady managers.

UB church society meeting outlines aims and invite

The U B Church Society and The Young People's Association of the UB church met at the parsonage. The membership was 49 with 33 year old attendees signing the constitution. They planned printing a pamphlet and extending an invitation to Rev Brane of Hygertown to speak. The next meeting will be at 50 o'clock at the UB church with Bible reading as the order of exercises.

A Frederick writer recalls a lithograph of ex President William Henry Harrison owned by D Clinton Kemp of East Fourth Street. The scene shows Harrison on his dying bed with relatives and noted figures including Daniel Webster and Secretary of the Treasury Tomas Ewing. The piece recounts a diary of memories from 1836 through 1841 and Harrison's 1840 campaign.
