Safety council names Olsen as top official
Laura Olsen, supervisor of operations and safety for Frederick County Public Schools, is named regional vice president of the Safety Council of Maryland SCM, the Maryland chapter of the National Safety Council. The 75 year old non profit serves Carroll, Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties and includes leaders from Alcoa Eustalco Works, Children's Village of Washington County, D.M. Bowman Trucking, London Fog Industries and Priority One Safety Consultants.

BoE approves extended field testing for high school exams
The State Board of Education votes to add one year of field testing before the new high school assessments become graduation requirements. Testing will begin in January with the class of 2005 the first to have diplomas contingent on passing the tests. The extended schedule aims to better gauge test accuracy while keeping the program’s goals intact. Navy Lt. Gurtis Neidhart completed a six month deployment with Helicopter ASW Squadron 15 aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. His wife Pamela is the daughter of Anne O'Brien of Olney. He joined the Navy in December.

Maryland State Boychoir Seeks New Singers for 1999
The Maryland State Boychoir invites boys ages seven to eighteen in Maryland to audition for the 1999 Resident Training Choir. Auditions are Tuesday January 26.
