Gaithersburg expands in 1990 amid annexations and new projects
Gaithersburg's 1990 saw major annexations behind the Walnut Hill area and Asbury Village, plans to annex Washingtonian Center, and a push to boost affordable housing with 120 apartment units at Diamond Square. The city opened a new senior center, began redevelopment of Quality Inn into Diamond Square apartments, and advanced the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory Science Center with a 3 million plan including a planetarium. The year featured a new pool at Summit Hall Farm Park and art in transit with Kaleidoscope at Shady Grove Metro Station, while officials pursued a wine sale ban and a strong financial outlook.
