Huntley Meadows Park Saved From Road Builders
In Fairfax County Virginia a 100 acre marsh within Huntley Meadows Park was preserved after developers and a county supervisor dropped a plan to build a four lane road. The Interior Department ruled the road would harm the ecosystem and a local coalition led by Norma Hoffman halted the project. The park attracts about 200000 visitors yearly for birdwatching and nature viewing, with beaver activity raising water levels and prompting a new boardwalk funded by a 1.17 million dollar bond. A environmental study is underway to forecast future ecology.
