Halleck wins GOP leadership in House revolt
Rep Charles A Halleck of Indiana defeated veteran Leader Joseph W Martin Jr of Massachusetts by a four vote margin as Republicans ousted the 20 year speaker. The shakeup precedes a showdown in the Senate over leadership and filibuster rules while Democrats choose Rayburn for speaker and Johnson to stay majority leader. The move signals a tougher pro Eisenhower stance in a Congress poised for the 6th term.

Frederick County prosecutor Edwin Nikirk charged with tax evasion
Edwin F. Nikirk, newly elected Frederick County state's attorney, was indicted by a federal grand jury on income tax evasion for 1952 to 1954. The three counts allege false returns reporting $20,844 income when it was $56,143 and tax due of $3,532 versus $13,956. Bail set at $1,000. Nikirk, 42, said the government has already accepted payments covering the deficiency plus interest and penalties. He took office Monday for a four year term to succeed Samuel W. Barrick. Assistant U.S. Attorney John G. Underwood noted the case does not target his job status.
