Wilkinson Chosen Senate President and Wilkinson as House Speaker

Gov Tawes selected George W. Dela for Senate president and Perry C. Wilkinson for House speaker. Edward Northrop and A Gordon Boone will serve as floor leaders with Frederick Milkus Jr. and Ridgely Melwa as chairmen. The slate awaits caucus approval as opening session looms.

Halleck wins GOP leadership in House revolt

Rep Charles A Halleck of Indiana defeated veteran Leader Joseph W Martin Jr of Massachusetts by a four vote margin as Republicans ousted the 20 year speaker. The shakeup precedes a showdown in the Senate over leadership and filibuster rules while Democrats choose Rayburn for speaker and Johnson to stay majority leader. The move signals a tougher pro Eisenhower stance in a Congress poised for the 6th term.

Frederick County prosecutor Edwin Nikirk charged with tax evasion

Edwin F. Nikirk, newly elected Frederick County state's attorney, was indicted by a federal grand jury on income tax evasion for 1952 to 1954. The three counts allege false returns reporting $20,844 income when it was $56,143 and tax due of $3,532 versus $13,956. Bail set at $1,000. Nikirk, 42, said the government has already accepted payments covering the deficiency plus interest and penalties. He took office Monday for a four year term to succeed Samuel W. Barrick. Assistant U.S. Attorney John G. Underwood noted the case does not target his job status.

Maryland seeks 25000 for wrongful imprisonment case

Baltimore attorney Robert J. Romadka says he will push for a 25000 state budget allocation or bill to compensate William D Onofrio who spent two years in Maryland Penitentiary for a robbery he did not commit The 1956 case ended with a miscarriage of justice and Onofrio’s 1959 release after an appellate ruling.

Fire Destroys Home After Furnace Overheat

A blaze within a residence caused extensive interior damage after a resident rushed inside and found Mrs. Perisho and two others. Investigators believe the fire started from an overheated furnace.

Navy Releases Rocket Pictures From High Altitude Flight

The Navy and Weather Bureau released the first rocket camera pictures from a high altitude flight over a weather system covering about 15 million square miles. The Dec launch from Virginia reached over 96 miles in altitude and produced a composite view spanning about 1,500 miles of horizon over the Atlantic Ocean.
