Jobless rate hits four year low in December

Washington AP reports the December jobless rate fell to 5.4 percent, the lowest since July 1990, while nonfarm payrolls rose by about 256,000. The year 1994 saw 3.5 million new jobs, a six year high, with wages up modestly and inflation subdued.

Middletown school budget plans add eight custodians and new staff

The budget projects eight more custodians at a cost of 187000 alongside requests from Dr Gadra for a full-time construction inspector and two half-time posts. If funded, total jobs rise to 577 since 1991, a 21.7 percent increase with strong gains in special education and transportation.

City police charge two with cocaine violations

Frederick police arrested Byron Keith Bowie 33 of Frederick and Jerome McClain Dyson 22 of Capitol Heights after an undercover buy of crack cocaine at 10 41 p m. Police recovered 58 racks of crack cocaine and charged Bowie with distribution and possession with intent to distribute and possession of cocaine. Dyson was charged with possession of intent to distribute possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both are held awaiting initial court appearance.

Glendening reacts to Sauerbrey rally at Hunt Valley Inn

Governor elect Glendening dismissed Sauerbrey’s election‑challenge suit as bordering on silly saying he has spent no real time on it. Sauerbrey has until noon to present final evidence alleging voting regulation violations. Gingrich lobbying reforms push stalls Senate bid

The Senate rejected a GOP plan to weaken filibuster rules by a 76 to 19 vote while President Clinton backed two Republican aims on line item veto and unfunded mandates. He and Rep. Gibbons pressed that tax cuts be paid for with spending cuts. Republicans pushed a balanced budget amendment and term limits for House and Senate members.
