Mountain Roads Open in County After Thaw and Wind
Mountain roads in the northwestern part of the county were dry and passable after thawing. State roads crews sprayed cinders on icy grades while ordinary traffic on the Blue Ridge Summit road from Thurmont resumed. Some unsurfaced country lanes in Rocky Ridge bogged after rains, forcing a doctor’s car to be abandoned for a horse drawn ride to reach a patient. Widespread wind and a sharp temperature drop followed, with subzero records and thick ice at Culler Lake. Special deputies in Montgomery County were appointed to protect property during the war, and a passenger plane evacuating Burma carried 74 people instead of 21.

Farmers Plead For Improved Highway Link
Farmers and property owners along the two mile dirt road from Fingerboard pike to Price's Distillery appealed to County Commissioners and Roads Engineer Roger Wileed Tie for an immediate upgrade. They described being marooned without mail, school bus service, or church access while the road thaws, urging a hard surface that would serve a large rural community. Officials offered no relief promise but acknowledged the need. Geisbert and Willard said they would present the petition to the Roads Board. Delegation members included M. W. Murphy, Dorsey Lawton, Charles Murphy, Fred Kelitz, Thomas W. McDonough, Wm T. Delaplaine, and Harry Burdette. They were told funds shortages and locality complicate year’s work, unless property owners and residents contribute toward costs. CHIMNEY FIRE A chimney fire at Claude Brightwell's residence was quickly extinguished by fire crews from Citizens and United companies. no damage reported.
