Italian Split Seen as Communists Threaten Independence
In Naples on January 4 Italian Communists accused the Committee of National Liberation of weakness and threatened to split from the committee to pursue an independent line against King Vittorio Emanuele III. They faulted other groups for not adopting an aggressive policy and criticized Allied restrictions on political action near the Fifth Army front. Eugenio Reale, Naples committee president, turned himself in over placards urging to “put the guilty ones to the wall” and said he would go to prison for the manifesto. Allied inquiry into the incident was pending. Matian parties were granted freedom of action in the fight against the King.
