Gas Tank Blast Injures Youth at Local Filling Station
An 18 year old, Thomas Gardner of East Fourth Street, was badly hurt when a 12 500 gallon gas tank exploded at the Cash and Carry filling station on East Patrice Street Friday afternoon around 4 30. He was rushed to Frederick City Hospital with concussion burns head and face injuries and possible eye damage. doctors later said sight was not impaired. The blast hurled him about 30 feet and caused extensive debris. The tank was buried 18 feet underground under a 50 ton concrete cover. a second tank nearby also exploded. Fire crews, witnesses, and a passing truck from New Windsor unit of the Gas Company reported the blast and firefighting efforts. The cause remains undetermined. Gardner was the station’s sole employee at the time.
