Mansfield Sees Viet War Outlook Darker After Year
In an AP interview Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield says the past year produced no progress toward a just Vietnam settlement and warns of rising danger of general war. He notes fewer options, potential troop increases in the south, and a shift toward a more American war with Saigon gains. He favors U Thant mediation and possible demilitarized zones and Southeast Asia neutrality notions.

Mansfield reviews South Vietnam pacification plan and politics
Mansfield says the army built to pacify South Vietnam is not gaining momentum or achieving much. He criticizes young leaders with little political knowledge and cites Ngo Dinh Diem's assassination as the turning point. He hopes stability comes from a new Constituent Assembly and its forthcoming constitution, but warns it will take a lot of time.
