Nobody Compromised Over Slavery Issue In 1960
In a four part series historian Bruce Catlin recounts how in 1860 the Charleston Democratic convention failed to find a compromise on slavery. Douglas sought a middle path while Southern extremists demanded a pro slavery platform. Breckinridge carried the South and Lincoln the North leading to a fractured party, a GOP victory and a looming national crisis as the campaign avoided the core issue. The piece notes the rise of the Constitutional Union party and ends with Lincoln’s election and escalating tensions.
